Animals Asia is an Asia-based government registered animal welfare charity headquartered in Hong Kong with Moon Bear Rescue Centres in China and Vietnam.

Through co-operating with local communities and government partners, Animals Asia is working to end cruelty and restoring respect for all animals in Asia.

Animals Asia’s main project, the Moon Bear Rescue, is aimed at bringing the barbaric practice of bear farming to an end. Moon bears, which can spend more than 20 years in coffin-sized cages on farms, are painfully milked regularly for their bile through crude catheters or permanently open holes in their abdomens. The bile is used in traditional Chinese medicine, even though over 50 herbal and synthetic alternatives are available, inexpensive and easily accessible.

In July 2000, Animals Asia signed a landmark agreement with the Chinese authorities to rescue 500 suffering moon bears from the worst bile farms in Sichuan province. In 2006, a similar agreement was signed with Vietnam authorities to rescue over 200 farmed bears.

At present we have rescued over 330 moon bears which are now living happy, peaceful lives at the China and Vietnam sanctuaries.
